Colston's School, Stapleton - Bristol

Laboratory refurbishment - over 3 years

Early in 2007 we were asked to tender for the furniture element of extensive refurbishment works in the science building at Colston’s School in Bristol. (7 laboratories, 2 prep rooms, 3 store rooms and 1 staff work room). Due to the scope of the project, the works were to be undertaken in three phases. After a full site survey and detailed consultation with the Facilities Manager, we listened to each of the teachers and technicians until we had an accurate picture of their requirements. We then prepared our initial CAD drawings.

These were revised and developed in accordance with the desires of the teaching staff, then detailed site drawings were drafted. In June 2008 we were given the go ahead for the first phase and with completion needed by the start of the Autumn term, time was getting on!

We worked closely with other contractors throughout the project. Our CAD service drawings were used by builders, Gentip Services Ltd., to establish correct positioning of new partition walls, doorways and all the service tails. This excellent relationship continued into 2009 for the second phase.

“Velstone” work surfaces were chosen. Solid natural stone/acrylic blend, highly resistant to chemical stain, seamless, repairable and highly suitable in schools.

Fume cabinets were by Safelab Ltd., and we coordinated the installation of four units. The school chose “Airone 1000” filtered cabinets (re-circulated air). The performance of this type of cabinet is suitable for Advanced Level science and importantly, the exterior of the impressive building retained its appearance.

All the cabinetry, bespoke units, wall cupboards, glass display, base units and teachers’ desks, were included. We also supplied china clay “Larch” lab sinks and “Belfast” wash up sinks, all water and gas taps, 13 amp sockets, “Gratnell” trays, trolleys and roller boards.

Both stages were completed on time and to budget, the school is delighted and we look forward to reaching a successful conclusion with phase 3 in 2010!
